What is the Drainage Division?

Drainage is a Division of the Plastics Pipe Institute Inc. (PPI). PPI is the major North American manufacturers’ trade association of advocacy and education for plastics use in pipe, conduit and infrastructure solutions. This Association includes manufacturers, raw material suppliers, equipment distributors, designers and manufacturers of equipment, and others involved in the production and application of corrugated plastic pipe used for the conveyance of stormwater and drainage from commercial, agricultural, residential, recreational and sanitation applications.

The Drainage Division provides drainage and water systems management solutions and includes members who focus on gravity flow drainage applications. Pipe materials covered within the Drainage Division are polyolefin: high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP).

It is a fact:
The next century of storm water technology and solutions is not written in concrete.

The Reliable, Proven and Cost-Effective Solution for Drainage

This new century of stormwater technology is not written in concrete. Municipalities and public agencies recognize that the future of stormwater management needs to utilize solutions that are reliable, proven, cost-effective, and provide a superior environmental solution.

Over the past several years the specification and use of dual wall corrugated plastic pipe for stormwater management has increased dramatically based on its superior attributes: the pipe's strength and durability, joint integrity and long-term cost-effectiveness.

Corrugated plastic pipe is manufactured from the highest quality materials and is the most technologically advanced product available to move stormwater, and wastewater.

Corrugated plastic pipe is the proven, reliable, cost-effective and safe solution for your long-term drainage needs.

Corrugated Plastic Pipe – The material of choice
  • Cost-effective
  • Durable
  • Flexible
  • 100-year lifespan
  • Environmental advantages
  • Safer to install

Industry Leaders

Across the nation, underground infrastructure continues to deteriorate and fail. The strength, durability and longevity of corrugated plastic pipe is proving to be the material of choice over traditional concrete or steel pipe.

Corrugated plastic pipe has been proven to be reliable and safe. It has a lower carbon footprint from cradle to grave than traditional materials. Plus, it is a cost-effective solution for the simplest to the most complex drainage needs.

Strength

HDPE corrugated pipe is a flexible pipe system that performs well in both high and low cover applications. Its unique ability to support and distribute live and dead loads enables it to meet almost every installation condition.

Joints

A variety of joining systems are available to meet the need of the application, from soil tight to water tight. Leak resistant joints mean that what's inside the pipe stays inside the pipe, and what's outside stays outside. This ensures that communities, citizens, ground water and wildlife are safer and more secure. Soil tight connections are commonly used providing an economical and effective means of joining pipe and fittings.

Chemically Inert and Abrasion Resistant

HDPE and polypropylene are two of the most chemically inert of all plastics; they are extremely resistant to chemicals, corrosion and abrasion. These characteristics give corrugated plastic pipe a significant long-term advantage over concrete and metal pipe.

  • 1933Polyethylene was first produced
  • Early 1950sA new grade of Polyethylene was developed - HDPE
  • Late 1950sHDPE pipe replaced metal pipe in oil and gas gathering systems
  • 1960First known corrugated plastic pipe was produced for land drainage (2-in diameter)
  • Early 1960sGas utilities started to replace iron pipes with HDPE pipe
  • 1960sHDPE pipe replaced clay pipe in agricultural drainage systems
  • 1967First corrugated polyethylene pipe was commercially produced in the U.S.
  • 1977Corrugated polyethylene pipe was produced from 2 - 12-in diameters
  • Late 1980sLarge diameter corrugated HDPE pipe replaced metal and concrete in stormwater culverts
  • 199142- and 48-in diameter corrugated polyethylene pipe were produced
  • PresentCorrugated thermoplastic pipe is available in sizes up to 60-in diameter
  • FutureHDPE pipe will be available in 72 and 84-in diameter

Economic Advantages

Installation

HDPE pipe is light and flexible, and is manufactured in long lengths. This can add up to significant installation cost savings.

Life Cycle Cost

With HDPE's resistance to abrasion and to chemicals, its life-cycle savings over alternative drainage materials are significant. Users can expect a minimum service life of 100 years in typical drainage applications.

Some of the many uses of HDPE:
  • Bottles
  • Car parts
  • Food storage containers
  • Gas tanks
  • Packaging
  • Pails
  • Pipes (water, sewer)
  • Plastic bags
  • Plastic lumber
